California Notary Renewal (2026): When to Apply, What It Takes, and What Happens If It Lapses

A California commission lasts four years. To renew without a break, take the exam at least six months before your commission expires and use the three-hour refresher course, which only counts if you apply before expiry. If it lapses, you need the six-hour course again.
